A balanced curriculum is offered based on the requirements of both Dutch and international curricula, but adapted for use in an international situation , and is sufficiently flexible to meet the individual needs of each child in order to encourage and develop their personal qualities.
The emphasis in the International Department is on English language lessons in all its aspects and topic-based learning . So, all subjects are reinforced by project work.
In our English lessons the children develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Such skills enable them to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate with others effectively. Children learn to become enthusiastic and critical readers of stories, poetry and drama as well as non-fiction and media texts.
For the caterpillar group, there are educational play activities. Reading and writing are introduced at an appropriate stage for each child. And for the cocoon group, the emphasis lies in learning and refining the basic elements of English. Lastly our butterfly group has begun to master many elements of English learning and is ready to fly.
Other subjects, such as, science and technology , geography , history and creative work are introduced through topic work. There is one major topic per term enabling pupils to experience all curriculum areas during the year.
First-hand international experiences of pupils are used to enrich appropriate subjects, such as, geography and history.
